A Highland skating team hit their personal record score at an international competition in France earlier this month.

The mixed-age synchronised skating team Northern Lights, based in Inverness, went to Montpellier to take part in a prestigious competition which saw 19 teams from France, Hungary, Switzerland, Italy and the Netherlands put on their best performance on ice - with the Highland team being the only GB representative.

This was the first international event for the team, which performed very well and took the 7th spot on the day.

Club spokesperson Sarah McIntosh said: “Northern Lights had a fantastic skate at their first International Competition coming in 7th, with a huge new personal best score of 53.52.

“It was an incredible achievement for them and it gave the team such a confidence boost.

“It’s a testament to all the hard work they put in, both in the performance and fundraising to cover travel expenses and the competition! There is so much work ahead of these events to be able to send over a team of around 15 people so they really put in a big effort and support from local businesses sponsoring the team has been incredible.

“Our team captain Holly deserves a special mention as this was her last competition before she heads off for university. Holly has been a pleasure to have as a skater and has been an amazing captain.”

The athletes enjoyed some well-deserved down-time on their way back from southern France with a pit stop at Disneyland Paris.

They will be back to training on Friday to start preparing for the coming season.

Coaches Amanda Clinton and Eilish Rennie said: “We are so proud of the team and grateful to all our sponsors.

“We are excited by the potential in the team and are looking forward to starting work on next season.”

The Northern Lights are the mixed-age team among the Highland Synchronized Ice Skating Teams, who also include the Highlanders, Aurora and the Highland Pups.
