The path is clear for Gary Cornish to aim for a world heavyweight title fight.

INVERNESS boxer Gary Cornish has headed to Russia after being invited to spar with WBA heavyweight title contender Alexander Povetkin.

Cornish has flown out with his coach Liam Foy to Sochi where he will spend a few days taking part in sparring sessions at the Olympic facility with the Russian boxer.

Povetkin is preparing for his WBA Inter-continental and WBO international heavyweight title fight against David Price on March 31 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff.

Foy said Povetkin was looking for a quality sparring partner to prepare for the fight and they were happy to offer their services.

"Gary is a tall orthodox British boxer and they have seen a similarity between him and Price in terms of stature," he said.

"It is an amazing opportunity for us to train with a world class fighter in the Olympic facility and it will help Gary maximise his training too."
