INVERNESS Caledonian Thistle have one game left to avoid having to compete in the Championship play-offs.

After drawing 1-1 with Dunfermline Athletic on Saturday, they dropped into ninth place after Queen’s Park thrashed Arbroath 5-0 to move into eighth.

Queen’s Park are in eighth place on 40 points with Inverness Caledonian Thistle in ninth on 39 points.

Now with both teams having one match remaining in the regular season, Inverness’ fate of avoiding the play-off is no longer in their own hands.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle’s final game is against Greenock Morton at the Caledonian Stadium on Friday at 7.45pm. At the same time, Queen Park will face Airdrie at Hampden Park.

The team that finishes in ninth place will face Montrose in the Championship semi final played over two legs. The winner will face either Alloa Athletic or Hamilton Academical in a two-legged final.

We take a look at what each of the outcomes on Friday will mean for Inverness Caledonian Thistle.

If Queen’s Park beat Airdrie…..

Inverness Caledonian Thistle will finish in ninth place regardless of their result against Morton and will face Montrose in the Championship play-off semi final.

The first leg will take place at Montrose on Tuesday, May 7, with the return leg on Saturday, May 11.

The winner will face either Alloa Athletic or Hamilton Academical in the two-legged final. The first leg will be played on Wednesday, May 15 with the second leg on Saturday, May 18.

If Queen’s Park draw with Airdrie and Inverness Caledonian Thistle beat Greenock Morton….

Inverness Caledonian Thistle will avoid the relegation play-off if they beat Morton and Queen’s Park draw or lose against Airdrie. Inverness will finish in eighth place on 42 points with Queen’s Park in ninth on 41 points.

If Queen’s Park lose against Airdrie and Inverness Caledonian Thistle draw with Morton….

Both teams will finish on 40 points. But Inverness will finish in eighth place due to a better goal difference of -1 and avoid the relegation play-off. Queen’s Park’s goal difference is currently -8.
