Newly launched fund looks to boost shinty opportunities to young people
A BUSINESS has celebrated 30 years of sponsoring shinty by launching a children and young people development fund.
The Camanachd Association – the sport’s governing body – announced that fish farming specialist Marine Harvest (Scotland) has created the fund, which aims to increase opportunities and participation at accredited or accrediting member clubs.
The new agreement will support shinty clubs in their development and is focused on enhancing chances for children and young people by providing a maximum grant award of £500.
The funding will be eligible for accredited member clubs who are proposing new or enhanced initiatives to develop shinty for those up to 18 years old.
Keith Loades, president of the Camanachd Association, said: “Yet again the sport of shinty is indebted to Marine Harvest for their generous support.

“In this year of young people this particular sponsorship award gives clubs with youth teams the opportunity to apply for funds to support the continued development of the game.”
The investment also commemorates the 125th anniversary of the Camanachd Association.
Ben Hadfield, managing director of Marine Harvest (Scotland), said: “We have been very impressed with the role the Camanachd Association has played in getting young people involved in the sport and we hope the fund will encourage even more to take part.”
Ronald Ross, regional development manager for the Camanachd Association, said: “Youth development at club level is integral to the future success of our sport and this new fund will go a long way to ensuring our young players are given opportunities that encourage them to continue their participation.
Applications must show how the impact of the project will be measured, also how any increased participation numbers will be sustained once the grant funding has been spent.
