SCOTTISH Opera make a return to the world of Gilbert and Sullivan, or at least their comic version of Japan, with its production of The Mikado.

The national company’s previousm partnership with the D’Oyly Carte Company, the traditional producers of Gilbert and Sullivan’s Savoy operas, was 2013’s hit The Pirates of Penzance, and a similar box office smash is predicted for this, another of the pair’s favourite light operas.

Several of The Pirates team return for Mikado, among them Richard Suart (Ko-Ko), Nicholas Sharratt (the hopelessly in love Nanki-Poo), Rebecca Bottone (Yum-Yum), former Scottish Opera emerging artist Sioned Gwen Davies (Pitti-Sing) and conductor Derek Clark.

Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado is at the Empire Theatre, Eden Court, from Thursday May 19 to Saturday 21.

However, Strathpeffer Pavilion also has some more serious British opera on Wednesday when Musick Fyne and the Marvel Baroque Players present Dido and Aeneas by Henry Purcell.
