Training is currently being offered in Inverness that could help prevent drug deaths.

Scottish Drugs Forum (SDF) in partnership with the Salvation Army is running training tomorrow (July 6) at Ness Bank Church from 12pm - 3pm, where members of the public can be shown how to safely administer Naloxone.

Naloxone can help reverse the effects of an opioid related overdose. 84 percent of those who died of a drug related death in Scotland last year had an opioid in their system. Scotland currently has the highest drug death rate in Europe.

Wes Steele, who works for SDF said: “We are teaching people how to intervene and safely administer Naloxone which can help reverse the effects of an opioid related overdose.

“It’s safe and easy to use and anyone in Scotland can be trained on how to use it, and be supplied with one to carry on their person to help if they find someone that is overdosed.”

The training takes 10 minutes, and it is open to anyone and everyone, where then both a nasal and injectable kit of the life-saving medicine can be taken away.

Mr Steele added: “If we have more people carrying a Naloxone kit, and they have the ability to use it, it will help reduce our tragic preventable drug death rate in Scotland.”

Nicola Callander who is also providing the training said: “We need to get the number of drug deaths down.

“It’s scary the number that are dying.

“The training is simple, and it only takes 10 minutes to learn. We need to make this kit more accessible to everyone.”

An e-learning module can also be found on the Scottish Families Affected by Alcohol and Drugs website. Kits can also be requested to be sent and discreetly posted.
