A 21-year-old Inverness man who is awaiting sentence at the High Court in Edinburgh after being convicted at trial of a serious assault has been jailed for 16 months.

Jordan Hughes, of School Lane, had previously admitted being concerned in the supply of cannabis in Nairn and elsewhere on January 4, 2021 and Sheriff Gary Aitken decided to await the outcome of his High Court trial which ended last week.

However he conceded to Hughes' lawyer Graham Mann, who said his client expected a lengthy term in prison: "Whatever sentence I pass today will not make any odds really, given his circumstances. This case needs a line drawn under it now."

Inverness Sheriff Court had heard previously that police attention was drawn to a car occupied by Hughes and a female co-accused, 23-year-old Sophie MacPhee, of Ashers Court, Nairn.

She was subsequently ordered to carry out 135 hours of unpaid community work after also admitting being concerned in the supply of the drug.

The vehicle had been stopped and when Hughes left the car, police could smell cannabis within and they were both arrested.

In total there was almost 1kg of cannabis and around £11,000 in cash.
