4 fun family time things to do in Inverness at the weekend
This week you can head off to the fair, get stuck in with planting and music at Simpsons Garden Centre as a new book launches, head out of town to the circus – and The Little Mermaid is diving back into the cinemas this week
1Dive back into Ariel's story
Rob Marshall's live action version of The Little Mermaid causes a big splash in expertly choreographed musical sequences including Daveed Diggs’ showstopping performances of Under The Sea and Kiss The Girl as red crab Sebastian, Halle Bailey’s heart-tugging Part Of Your World as Ariel and Melissa McCarthy’s deliciously vampy glide through Poor Unfortunate Souls as Ursula. But when the director allows a tsunami of digital effects to drown his human cast, his film threatens to capsize. Still, the story remains faithful to the animated edition with headstrong mermaid Ariel (Bailey) obsessed with humankind, secretly collecting discarded “thingamabobs” in direct violation of orders from her father King Triton (Javier Bardem). Wisecracking seagull Scuttle (voiced by Awkwafina), is an expert on these trinkets, advises Ariel on their practical uses above the waves. During a violent storm, a ship commanded by Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) runs aground and Ariel rescues him from a watery grave. Restored to full health, Eric vows to find his siren-songed savour. The film is at Eden Court Cinema from Friday, May 26 to Thursday, June 8 with audio described, socially distant, descriptive subtitles, dream & scream, and relaxed performances being screened.
