5 feelgood things to do in Inverness this weekend
Choose from Nunsensations, much music with the return of Under Canvas, Mission Impossible, dance options and Croy Live – two nights by popular demand ... and a reminder about Hey Duggee!
1 Best fun bar nun ...
If you saw the original production of Nunsense by Dan Goggins presented some years ago in an amateur production in Inverness, you will know the lively comedy you might be in for if you extend the habit and head to see a later sequel – Nunsensations. This time it is presented by AlMack Productions with Alan Mackintosh as producer, a familiar face as a musical director, in the city. But this time there's a bit of a novelty as the underused stage at the North Kessock Village Hall is where to find the show. Five nuns let loose in Vegas have fun with jokes and musical numbers and a cabaret feel. Having seen the show, I can recommend it for a night of fast-moving comedy, with a live band and some local talents in the cast. It all starts at 7.30pm in shows on Thursday, Friday and Saturday with a Saturday matinee at 2.30pm too.
2 Under Canvas is back!
The summer-long destination for great music in the now regular little pop-up venue Under Canvas on Eden Court's lawn is back with two acts most days and the chance to grab a drink and something to eat too. The first week's line-up just shows how varied and exciting the bookings are for this year. Here they are and check out the full season at INFO below. Friday, July 7 Graham Mackenzie: The Dawnig + Hushman; Saturday, July 8 Karawane Eden Court, 4.30pm/ 8pm; Sunday, July 9 Rosie Sullivan + Inn Echo Eden Court, 2pm/ 5.30pm; Wednesday, July 12 Sandy Brechin & Gregor Borland + Lewis McLaughlin and band Eden Court, 4.30pm/ 8pm; Thursday, July 13 Jack Badcock + Gordie MacKeeman & Boys Eden Court, 4.30pm/ 8pm. 3 Your mission – if you choose to accept it ...
It's the big one for this summer –Tom Cruise is back from Monday, July 7 at Vue Cinema in Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One (12A) as Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and his IMF team have their most dangerous mission yet. More death-defying stunts for real in the opening of what will be a two-part action thriller directed by Christopher McQuarrie, who has been behind the camera since the thrilling fifth instalment Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation. Ethan and fellow Impossible Missions Force (IMF) operatives Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg) and Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames) face a terrifying new enemy as they race to save the world. Forces from Ethan’s past – such as former IMF director Eugene Kittridge (Henry Czerny) – threaten the people that Ethan loves most, including MI6 agent Ilsa Faust (Rebecca Ferguson). Ethan ignores the pleas of his team (surprise!) and bets his life to guarantee success, to find the terrifying new weapon that threatens humanity.
4 You need to dance?
Try getting yourself to Connect for some hard techno at Upstairs, on Friday, July 7 from 9pm to 2am. And on Saturday, July 8 Under Canvas is where you can find Karawane on the lawn at Eden Court, at 4.30pm/ 8pm.
5 Homegrown traditional music live ...
Croy Live features fiddle-player and composer Graham Mackenzie playing from his latest album The Dawning on Monday and Tuesday, July 10 and 11 at Croy Village Hall at 7.30pm. And an exciting extra is that the shows – which are part of the album tour dates – will feature Mike McGoldrick, Innes Watson and Rory Matheson who were among those who played on the album recording. "It’ll be great to have a run of several gigs with them. I’ve played with each of them individually and know them very well but this will be the first time we come together as a group. I’m sure it’s going to be a fantastic tour!" Graham said in an interview this week with Inverness Courier, find it HERE. Special guest is Inverness singer Saffron Hanvidge.
