An uplifting experience as Scottish and Bavarian weightlifters visit Inverness Town House

WEIGHTY issues were under consideration at Inverness Town House when a group of young athletes paid a visit.

Weightlifters from across Scotland and Bavaria even made light work of Inverness South councillor Ken Gowans when they called in ahead of an informal competition and training session at Inverness College UHI last Thursday as part of a visit that also saw them visiting north tourist sites including Loch Ness and Skye.

Steve Walsh, chairman of Inverness Weightlifting Club, was involved in organising the visit to the Highland capital by the Bavarian delegation, along with the University of the Highlands and Islands and cllr Gowans.

Inverness is twinned with Augsburg in the German region.

“It’s a win-win – it strengthens the bonds between the two communities,” he said.

The German group’s leader, Gerd Miesbauer, said: “It’s always good to speak with other weightlifters of the same age and find out what experience they have.

“Sport is always a good thing because it has no politics.”

Provost Helen Carmichael was also pleased to welcome the young visitors.

“It’s been a pleasure,” she said. “They have all these young champions.”
