Best evaluation in two years for Nairn care home
A Nairn care home has received its best inspection report since 2022, with praises to the care and compassion provided by staff to the residents.
St. Olaf Care Home on Cawdor Road was rated as very good for its support of people’s wellbeing and for its setting after an unannounced Care Inspectorate visit in September.
The reporter wrote that, although there are some areas for improvement, they found that “people were treated with compassion, dignity and respect” at the care home, which can cater for just over 40 residents.

This is an improvement from previous inspections, in which its leadership was rated only as “adequate” (scoring three on a maximum of six) - whereas now it has been rated as good (four on six).
This is the best evaluation the care home has received since May 2022.
The report stated: “People benefitted from high-quality nursing care which was very responsive to any concerns or changes in their health and wellbeing.
“We saw kind, caring and compassionate interactions between staff and the people they support. Staff clearly knew people well, they were very attentive to their needs and were able to provide comfort, reassurance, and de-escalate situations effectively because of this.”
The location and maintenance of the space were also praised in the report.
It said: “The home environment was warm, comfortable and very clean. The environment was very well maintained and some areas were being redecorated during the inspection. Housekeeping staff were dedicated to maintaining a very high level of cleanliness and hygiene throughout the home and had very good systems in place to enable this.”
The inspection report found that areas of improvement would be a review a deployment of staff in communal areas to ensure “people are having meaningful engagement” and are “monitored safely” and that care plans should be more “person-centered” rather than task-oriented.
Areas for improvement found in previous inspections were almost completely met.
Kath Allan, St Olaf Care Home Manager, said: “We are always focused on ensuring everyone at St Olaf Care Home receives the highest standards of personalised, quality care and support. These grades reflect the dedication of our entire team in making St Olaf Care Home a place where residents feel valued, supported and cared for.
“While it comes as no surprise, it was especially heartening to see the report noting the kindness of our colleagues and the positive, collaborative atmosphere within the home. I’m very proud to lead such an amazing team and so pleased that our hard work and dedication have been recognised.
“We are constantly striving for excellence in every aspect of care, so we will continue to build on these achievements, working tirelessly to maintain and exceed the standards we've set. I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank all who took the time to provide feedback to the Care Inspectorate, as well as to our residents, families and team members who make St Olaf such a special place.”
