A book company that was started two years ago by an Inverness woman has won a prestigious award.

The Wee Book Company majors on the humour of the Scots language and won the Scots Business o’ the Year award at the 2020 Scots Language Awards.

Susan Cohen (56) summed up the award as “pure dead brilliant!” after Scots celebrities, artists and speakers, including comedian Janey Godley, gathered online to celebrate and recognise the heroic efforts and work of the people and organisations who champion Scots’ unique culture, music and words.

The Scottish Government was one of the sponsors of the awards. Ms Cohen was educated at the High School then Aberdeen University before qualifying as a lawyer.

Her father Anthony Cohen, who died aged 81 earlier this year, is well remembered in north sporting circles as a shinty player and heavyweight athlete on the Highland games circuit. His wife Betty still lives in Inverness.

The Wee Book Company’s brand of Wee Books has gone from strength to strength. Previous memorable titles include The Wee Book o’ Cludgie Banter, The Wee Book o’ Haivers and Blethers and for these Covid times, an ebook called A Wee Selection o’ Lockdown Mince.

Its upcoming Wee Book o’ Fav’rite Scottish Words was compiled during lockdown, during which the Wee Book Company kept up the spirits of its Facebook followers with its popular feature, Wurd o’ the Day.

Ms Cohen and partner Andrew McAllister, who runs company sales, now live in Midlothian.

She said: “We feel that our Wee Books are important right now as not only do we all need a good laugh but we also need to feel a sense of community, a sense of belonging.

“We missed a big party, but getting the award online was an amazing thing.”
