Nairn Golf Club gets ready to host 122nd Women’s Amateur Championship with upgrades across the course
It’s set to be an exciting season for Nairn golfers, with a major championship set to come to the town this summer.
Nairn Golf Club are getting ready to host the 122nd Women’s Amateur Championship in June, which will attract elite players from around the world.
With 144 competitors from 20 different countries, the tournament is set to be a showcase of world-class amateur golf.
“We are proud to be welcoming the best female amateurs in the world to Nairn and we hope they will love the course and the condition it is presented in,” said general manager Paul Mills.
“Richie Ewan, Marty Smith and our whole greenkeeping team have been working hard all winter and we are all set for the summer ahead – we couldn’t be more excited.”
Enthusiastic members are set to volunteer, with 75 already signed up.
Local clubs have also been invited to get involved.
The Women’s Amateur Championship was last held at Nairn in 1979, when the winner was the BBC golf broadcaster Maureen Madill.
Preparations for the season ahead have continued throughout the winter, with the club focusing on maintenance work ahead of welcoming visitors again at the beginning of April.
In May, the club will jointly host a visit to the Highlands from the European Institute of Golf Course Architects (EIGCA)
Following the championship, the club will conduct a five-year strategic review of its facilities, building on the £1.2million investment made in 2019 ahead of the return of the Amateur Championship.
Plans are also underway to expand the greenkeeping team to 16 members, and a new welfare facility - which includes offices, a canteen, drying room, showers, and toilets — has been completed.
