Inverness BrightHouse customers advised to continue making payments
CUSTOMERS of the UK’s largest rent-to-own operator, BrightHouse, which went into administration earlier this month, are being advised to continue their payments where possible.
The firm had already been reported to be in financial difficulties before the coronavirus crisis forced the closure of all its 240 shops throughout the UK, including its Inverness and Elgin branches.
BrightHouse has around 200,000 rent-to-own customers, many on low incomes, making monthly payments for household appliances.
Advisers at Scotland’s national consumer advice service, consumeradvice.scot, are providing free, impartial advice to those affected.
Colin Mathieson, spokesman for consumeradvice.scot, said: “The collapse of BrightHouse has raised questions for many consumers across Scotland with regards to their rights under prior hire purchase agreements.
“Consumers are advised to continue making payments, as falling behind may incur additional charges as per the agreements that are currently in place. Late or missed payments could also still impact on credit files.
“The coronavirus outbreak has caused financial difficulties for many people in Scotland.
“BrightHouse customers who are currently experiencing financial difficulties are encouraged to communicate with the company to negotiate potential payment holidays or alternative ways of paying.”
BrightHouse's website continues to operate at www.brighthouse.co.uk while administrators Grant Thornton try to find buyers for all, or some, of the business.
