A CRUISE boat run by a trust providing free trips for people with special needs returned to the Caledonian Canal today (Tuesday) for its new season.

Organisations, clubs and groups are invited to join the skippers and crews of the ‘Highland Seagull’, a 50-foot boat which will ply the waters of the canal between Muirtown and Dochgarroch, morning and afternoon, Monday to Friday, until September 23.

Each trip lasts around two hours and leaves from the twin jetties beside Tomnahurich Bridge. There is a change of volunteer skipper and crew each day.

Each trip can accommodate up to 12 passengers - or eight passengers and four wheelchairs.

The Highland branch of Seagull Trust Cruises was set up to provide free canal cruises for people with special needs, including the elderly and infirm, those confined to wheelchairs and children. Among the regular passengers are families who have children suffering from cancer.

At a recent pre-season lunch, over 40 branch volunteers and guests gathered to thank Tuesday crew member Tom Wallace, of Drumdeven Road, Inverness, for 15 years’ service. Tom was presented with a commemorative plaque by chairman John Gordon.

To book a cruise, phone 01349 886 606 and ask for the Seagull Trust Cruises booking office.
