Active travel charity Sustrans is calling for submissions for a new arts project to be located along the National Cycle Network Path, on the west Riverside in Nairn between the A96 road and Jubilee Bridge.

The initiative is a tribute to keen cyclist Jan Nowell, who was based in Findhorn and passed away in 2022.

Ms Nowell left a discretionary fund in her will to be distributed by her brother David and, due to her passion for cycling, art and the environment, he felt that donating some of the funds to support an art project on the National Cycle Network would be appropriate.

On its website, Sustrans stated: “Jan lived in Findhorn for a number of years, we therefore felt that siting a piece of art close to this area on traffic free National Cycle Network would be fitting.

“We hope to commission a piece of public art on a traffic-free section of the National Cycle Network. Nairn Riverside has been identified as a location for this.

“This would create a point of interest for walkers, wheelers and cyclists along the route and serve as a place that Jan’s loved one’s can visit. The artwork would be something the community want, as well as being something which is designed with the local context in mind.”

The charity stated that they hope to commission an artist based in the Nairnshire and Moray areas, who will undertake “light touch community engagement”, design, fabricate and coordinate the install of an artwork.

Possible themes are: The environment, nature, active travel (walking/wheeling cycling).

Anyone interested in taking part can find more information at this link or contact katie.rowland@sustrans.org.uk.

The deadline for this project is on Thursday, April 3 at 12pm.
