Canal college sees students gain new skills
YOUNG people who took part in a pioneering skills programme centred on Scotland’s canals network have celebrated their achievement.
The "canal college" initiative run by the Scottish Waterways Trust is a 14-week programme that sees young people aged 16-30 boost their skills through a range of projects to enhance Scotland’s canals.
Taking place across the country the work of Highland participants included carrying out repairs to the Thomas Telford-built Ness Weir at Dochgarroch.
They marked the end of the course this week with a gathering for family and friends on the Caledonian Canal as Provost Helen Carmichael also attended to offer them her congratulations.
Karen Moore, chief executive of Scottish Waterways Trust, said: "Scotland’s canals are national treasures and are the perfect place for us to provide unique heritage learning opportunities for young people who need our support.
"The programme appeals to young people who may have been disengaged from traditional learning environments and offers them a new way of learning."
A new programme begins in January. To find out more visit www.scottishwaterwaystrust.org.uk
