The National Trust for Scotland is celebrating the variety of skilled people within the Inverness community with activities at Culloden, Hugh Miller’s Birthplace Cottage and Abertarff House as part of its Fun Palaces programme on Sunday.

The conservation charity's events are keen to welcome locals who are passionate about arts, crafts, nature and heritage to share their knowledge.

At Culloden, nature lovers can join the team on a tour encountering the big beasts – Highland and Shetland cow – and little beasties living at the site. There will also be craft workshops to create origami animals.

Inverness’s oldest house, Abertarff House, will be hosting a day of fairytale and folklore fun, where locals can learn about the magic and superstition around the local species of rowan trees and make their own protective rowan charm. There will also be bracelet making and storytelling in the comfy corner, capturing imaginations with stories of magic, monsters, heroes and villains.

For Fun Palaces weekend, the humble abode of inspirational geologist, folklorist and fossil hunter, Hugh Miller will be welcoming locals to take part in a mini beast hunt with top tips on how to spot little creatures. For keen crafters, volunteers will also be leading embroidery and crochet workshops.

Katey Boal, the trust’s regional Fun Palaces organiser, said: “We’re so pleased with the wide range of fun activities across all of our properties for the local community to join in. We will be celebrating the often hidden skills of our brilliant volunteers and we’re looking forward to welcoming lots of locals to learn new skills, including knitting, spinning, art, gardening, music workshops, mini beast hunting and storytelling and much more.”
