Council tenants will see their garage rent increase by £1.60 - taking the total to £9.62, while non-tenants pay an extra £1.92, for a total of £11.54 per week.

Councillor Michael Green, chair of the Nairnshire Area Committee - whose last meeting saw the agreement for the rent increase - said: “Garages and garage sites within Nairnshire are competitively priced, and even taking today’s agreed increase into account, our rates still sit below the average across all other areas in Highland.

“Equally, we recognise that the majority of our garages are used by local residents for storage purposes, with the Council’s offering at a fraction of the cost of commercial solutions.”

An increase in garage rent prices were also agreed in other wards, with Dingwall and Seaforth Area Committee setting a 6 per cent increase (taking it to £11.93 weekly for tenants and to £14.31 for non-tenants)

According to the report presented ahead of the Nairnshire Area Committee meeting, the council currently rents a total of 97 units in the area between garages (34) and garage sites (63).

Based on current occupancy, this would the move is expected to bring a total of around £21,950 annually, an increase of more than £3,600.
