Highland Council secures loan to fund energy improvements
Highland Council is planning to increase its programme of energy efficiency measures after receiving a record loan to finance more projects.
The money will be put towards schemes including switching internal and external building lights to more efficient LED lighting, installing more solar panels across its estate and upgrading inefficient oil boiler systems.
It predicts that carbon emissions could be reduced by 1600 tonnes, adding up to an annual saving of more than £600,000 on the council's energy bills.
The £3.5 million interest-free loan comes from Salix Finance, an independent organisation that provides interest-free loans for investment in improving energy efficiency.
