Deadline nears for young musicians entering Nairn Book and Arts Festival competition

Young musicians in Nairn are being urged to act fast as the deadline to enter this year’s Young Musician Competition at the Nairn Book and Arts Festival approaches.

Applications for the competition – run in partnership with the Rotary Club of Nairn – close on Saturday, May 31, and festival organisers are keen to see more talented youngsters take up the opportunity to perform.

Open to musicians aged between eight and 18, the competition provides a platform for performers of all styles – whether classical, folk, jazz or contemporary – to showcase their talent.

Entrants will compete in either a junior category for primary school-aged children or a senior category for high school-aged performers.

The competition will begin with a preliminary round on Saturday, June 28, and culminate in a live final on the opening day of the 2025 Nairn Book and Arts Festival – Saturday, August 30 – at Nairn Community & Arts Centre.

Winners from both the Junior and Senior categories will receive a cash prize as well as an invitation to perform at the Rotary Charity Concert.

To add further weight to the contest, organisers have confirmed a panel of award-winning judges.

Festival organisers have also revealed the judging panel for this year’s competition which features three respected figures from the local music scene.

Internationally acclaimed opera and concert tenor Christopher Josey, now a vocal tutor based in Aviemore, Alison Mackenzie, founder of the award-nominated Croy Live and former principal teacher of music, and D James Ross a well-known local performer and director of musical ensembles spanning early music to cabaret.

Winners in both the junior and senior categories will receive a cash prize and an invitation to perform at the Rotary Charity Concert on November 22, also held at the Nairn Community & Arts Centre.
