MORE than 50 drivers were caught speeding near schools by police during the October holidays.

Enforcement was carried out near a number of schools including Holm Primary, Lochardil Primary, Hilton Primary and Cradlehall Primary.

During the week of enforcement 36 drivers were warned for speeding offences, three drivers were issued with conditional offers of a fixed penalty and 12 drivers were reported to the procurator fiscal – of these, three were reported for dangerous driving offences after vehicles were detected travelling at more than twice the speed limit.

A 26-year-old man who was stopped near Hilton Primary on Thursday will also be reported for a number of other offences, including driving while disqualified and without insurance.

Sergeant Gus Murray from Police Scotland’s Highland and Islands road policing team said: “It is disappointing that drivers continue to fail to comply with speed limits around schools and we will continue to carry out enforcement.”

It followed similar operations in Inverness in August and September.

During school term time reduced speed limits nearby are aimed at improving road safety and encouraging children to walk or cycle.
