Dozens of speeders caught outside Inverness schools
POLICE hope it will not take the death of a child to make motorists slow down after almost 50 drivers were caught speeding outside schools during a three-day crackdown.
Some vehicles were recorded hurtling through 20mph zones — including Old Edinburgh Road, next to Hilton Primary School — at nearly twice the limit, despite flashing speed signs in the area.
Three drivers were reported to the procurator fiscal for alleged excessive speed — those pushing 40mph — during the action prompted by complaints from parents. A further 26 motorists received on-the-spot speeding fines while 20 were warned.
Sergeant Mel Fowler hoped it would not take a tragedy before motorists slowed down, admitting the force was aware of several near misses reported by the public.
“Hopefully, that day will never come and by enforcing the available legislation we can change driver behaviour and prevent any future injury or fatality to a youngster because it’s not just the youngster and their family’s lives that are ruined, but it is their own as well,” he said.
