The case took so long to come to court as Macdonald had failed to appear for previous court hearings and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

He was held in custody over the weekend for his appearance before Sheriff Sara Matheson on Monday of this week.

Defence solicitor Rory Gowans said: "The background here is due to an off period in his on-off relationship and he had gone to the house to see his child, only to find another man there.

"There was an exchange of words and matters escalated from there."

Macdonald admitted assault to injury and a failure to appear for a court hearing.
