FIRE BADLY damaged part of the former Fort Augustus Abbey, now a luxury holiday home development.

The outbreak was in the steam room and sauna area of the leisure complex. The steam room was destroyed and neighbouring areas suffered smoke damage.

Fire units from Fort Augustus, Fort William and a specialist unit from Inverness attended the A-listed protected building that formerly was a Benedictine monastry school until 1993. It stands on a beautiful part of the village with views north up Loch Ness.

No one was injured in the incident, and staff declined to comment on the fire.

The abbey was converted to high-end holiday apartments and private residences at a cost of around £30 million by the Santon Group, and is now known as The Highland Club.
