SECONDARY school pupils have been given an insight into the life of a firefighter.

Youngsters from Fortrose Academy visited the Inverness Fire Station as part of a skills for work course. They took part in a variety of entry tests that challenged their physical capabilities, problem-solving skills, team work and dexterity.

As part of the course, pupils are placed in a variety of workplace situations.

Fortrose Academy’s head of health Muir Morton said: “Pupils had a fantastic day at the fire station with the Scottish Fire and Highland Community Action Team, who put them through their paces in what was a thoroughly engaging and worthwhile experience.”

The pupils have also met representatives of other emergency services including the Scottish Ambulance Service. Mr Morton said: “The paramedics discussed the importance of communication, teamwork and planning ahead when dealing with a range of different situations.

“Pupils were given the chance to see various items of equipment, ask questions and have a go at specific one-to-one scenarios and the staff were kind enough to take along a response vehicle and go through a paramedic pack.”

Some pupils of Millburn Academy in Inverness are also on the course and will visit the fire station soon.
