POLICE were turning back motorists this morning following a landslide between Fortrose and Avoch on the A832.

According to eyewitnesses, heavy rain, a landslide and tree caused the road to be blocked on the morning of December 31, since approximately 8.30am.

The eyewitnesses also say that police have been turning motorists around at the blocked section of road.

The closure comes amid active amber and yellow weather warnings for rain and snow in the Highlands and a spate of travel disruption in the region.

Ferries and railways are badly affected by the severe weather, and roads have also been hit by flash flooding.

More than 20 flood warnings are also in place across the Highlands and Moray - including three severe “danger to life” warnings for Aviemore, Kincraig and Carrbridge.

And thousands of residents living in Ross-shire, Sutherland and Caithness were also being impacted by a spate of power outages that left more than 1800 homes and businesses without electricity.
