Future of Cameron Barracks raised with Minister during 1959 visit
CONCERNS over the potential closure of Cameron Barracks in Inverness were raised with the new Minister of State for Scotland when he made a four-day visit to the Highlands.
A deputation from Inverness Chamber of Commerce met Lord Forbes at the Town House in February when they discussed a broad range of issues including the need for additional industries for the town and country. They pointed out the town was to lose the Royal Highland Show and there was a possibility of Cameron Barracks closing.
Other problems included the Duntelchaig water scheme, the provision of a new slaughterhouse and the restoration of a road at the Longman.
In a press conference at the end of his visit which also included Ross-shire, the minister said he was "favourably impressed" by the evidence he had seen that the people of the Highlands were willing to make efforts to help themselves. He maintained that was one of the best guarantees of prosperity for the future.
He also announced that in future helicopters would be made available for remote areas ensuring no-one was out of range of air ambulances.
