A charity providing care services in a rural area south of Loch Ness is celebrating a “gaming-changing” grant to buy two electric cars.

Boleskine Community Care (BCC) has received £31,100 from SSE Renewables -Highland Sustainable Development Fund to buy the vehicles for its care staff.

It will enable the charity to enhance its essential care at home services, ensuring continued support for older and vulnerable residents in the community.

As a lifeline for many, BCC in partnership with Sunflower Care provides crucial in-home care services that allow people to remain independent in their own homes.

Susan Erlam, a BCC trustee, said the introduction of electric vehicles would not only improve the efficiency and reach of care staff but would also support environmental sustainability by reducing the charity’s carbon footprint.

“This grant from SSE Renewables is a game-changer for our charity,” she said.

“Reliable and cost-effective transport is critical for our care team, and these electric cars will ensure we can continue providing high-quality care while also aligning with our commitment to a greener future.”

BCC hopes the new vehicles will help attract new care staff as transport can often be a barrier to recruitment in the rural location.

The cars will also be used by BCC staff to support other vital community needs such as community transport, prescription collections, and befriending visits to people in the community.

Carol Masheter, SSE community investment manager, said SSE Renewables was delighted to support Boleskine Community Care with its transition to Net Zero.

“The EV cars will support the provision of care at home services, enhance community transport and improve the health and well being of local people,” she said.
