In my travels around the region and through continued engagement with our members, there is agreement that there has never been such a wealth of opportunity across a wide range of sectors.

That said, the ability for the full potential to be realised for the people, communities and businesses across the region, we need to find the right solutions for new, and the upgrading of, existing infrastructure as a key enabler to unlock economic potential.

In addition to the well documented need for road upgrades and reliable ferry services, the importance of a regional network of deep-water ports, digital and mobile connectivity for all and an electricity network capable of delivering the needs for national net zero ambitions will all be vital.

Aligning the delivery for all of these will be key to the creation of local business and community wealth during the construction and operation, but also to ensure that the capabilities are in place to service the future needs.

Emerging industries such as offshore wind and equally our traditional renewables, aquaculture and whisky industries who are investing tens of millions into their regional assets, should have the confidence to continue to invest to meet demand.

Collaboration will be the key to sustainable social and economic growth and SCDI can convene members to create a cohesive strategy, meaningful outcomes and action.

Grant Campbell is SCDI’s regional manager for the Highlands and Islands.
