Highlanders urged to vote in the independence referendum
The independence referendum is weeks away and Scotland will soon be choosing whether to remain part of the United Kingdom or dissolve a partnership which has lasted for more than 300 years and go it alone. Here, Alistair Carmichael, Secretary of State for Scotland, explains why, whatever your view, it is vital that you have your say in shaping the future of the nation.
When I was a kid growing up on Islay, history was something you read about in books. On Thursday, September 18, it will be something you, I and eligible voters in every part of Scotland, from our great cities to our most remote villages, will make.
Quite simply, we hold the nation’s future in our hands when we vote in the independence referendum.
It really is that big a deal – for Scotland, for your community – and for you. This isn’t like a general election where we can vote again in four or five years’ time. The decision to remain part of the UK or leave forever will determine the future of our families and our country once and for all. It’s Scotland’s date with destiny and that’s too important to ignore or leave to somebody else. Every vote counts.

What none of this will do – and what I would never presume to do – is tell you how to vote. That’s down to you.
All I would say is, vote with your heart, but also with your head. Vote for what you think is right for Scotland and for your community, but most importantly of all, vote.
