Inverness healthcare worker honoured as the UK’s physician associate of the year 2024

A healthcare worker at Raigmore Hospital has been honoured as the UK’s physician associate of the year 2024.

Liam Allan, a physician associate (PA), based in the respiratory department at Raigmore Hospital, has worked at the hospital for the past five years providing exceptional care to patients and contributing significantly to his department.

He was honoured by the Faculty of Physicians Associates at a ceremony in London.

Initially focusing on caring for inpatients, Liam has expanded his role to include supporting outpatient clinics.

Beyond his clinical responsibilities, he has played a key role in establishing the PA profession at a national level and contributes to the MSc Physician Associate course at the University of Aberdeen.

Dr.Edward Paterson, consultant respiratory physician with NHS Highland, praised Liam and his colleagues.

He said: “All of the PAs at Raigmore Hospital significantly enhance the quality of care patients receive. They are knowledgeable, diligent, and work at a very high level within their specialist areas, all while being supported and supervised by doctors.

“PAs provide consistency within departments and are a versatile part of the workforce, helping to make services more resilient.

“This recognition underscores not only Liam’s dedication and contribution to patient care but also the growing importance of Physician Associates in supporting modern healthcare delivery.”

Liam said: “I am overwhelmed by the kind messages from colleagues, mentors, family and friends since receiving this award. I am truly honoured to be named by the Faculty of Physician Associates as UK Physician Associate of the year for 2024.

“This achievement is a reflection of the inspirational patients and colleagues that I have the privilege of working with every day. Being a Physician Associate is about teamwork and collaboration, working to deliver quality care for our patients. I will continue to work for the people of the Highlands to support quality health care provision.

“As this profession moves into its next chapter, I look forward to continuing to learn and grow alongside such dedicated people.”

Liam began his healthcare career as a Diagnostic Radiographer at Dr Gray’s Hospital in Elgin. He later pursued a two-year MSc in PA Studies at the University of Aberdeen, undertaking placements the Highland region.

Today, Liam balances his demanding career with family life, being a devoted husband and father to his young son.
