A newly qualified driver was dared to do a wheel spin just two days after passing his test when a group of young motorists met at an Inverness car park.

Sawmill worker, 19-year-old Jack Rennie of Kings Court, Beauly managed to carry out the technique for five seconds but he was seen by police who had been alerted to the antisocial motoring behaviour.

Inverness Sheriff Court heard that the teenager immediately apologised to the officers and fiscal depute Karen Poke added: "He said he was dared to do it. He had just passed his test two days before."

Rennie admitted driving carelessly by accelerating harshly in Eastfield Way car park on the night of October 18, 2023.

Defending, Clare Russell told Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald: "This has been a salutory lesson for him."

Fining Rennie £580 and banning him from driving for 54 days, Sheriff Macdonald told him: "This was the height of stupidity two days after passing your test. I hope you have grown up after this."
