Lisa Brown
Home carer, Lisa Brown, has been praised for the kindness and dedication she shows to all of those she cares for in the Nairn area.
Lisa has been a carer for six years. She previously worked in a care home but over the past year has been providing support and care to folk in their own homes.
A nomination highlighted many of the extra support she provides, from shopping, collecting medication and even driving one lady to Inverness for her birthday and back home again.
“Lisa is a breath of fresh air in our beleaguered industry of social and personal care. She calls in on each of her service users with the same compassion, dedication and support throughout the whole of her working day. She goes above and beyond.
“Lisa is a credit to care. She does her job, professionally and carefully but gives so much in the process.”
Surprised by being shortlisted, Lisa said: “I just feel I do what most people would do. I don’t feel it deserves an award. The little things that I do, I don’t feel it is that much but it's lovely to be shortlisted.
“I do enjoy helping people and looking after people, making sure they have everything they need and that they’re happy. That’s why I really enjoy this job, that’s what it’s all about ‒ looking after people’s needs and making sure they’re OK.”
Wanda Mackay
‘Wanda Woman’, Wanda Mackay, is a real-life superhero and well deserving of her moniker!
An absolute force of nature, Wanda has been involved in youth and community work for almost 30 years, working across the generations supporting young people, particularly young carers as well as senior citizens.
As the youth and development officer at Fortrose Academy, her role is full-on but in addition to her professional role, Wanda also cares for her family too.
Her brother Kenneth sustained an acquired brain injury and she has been caring for him for the past seven years, as well as supporting her parents. Wanda’s mum has severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) which requires oxygen support daily and her dad has mixed dementia.
A nomination paid tribute to the incredible support Wanda has given both to her family but also to so many others over the years throughout her community: “Wanda, known as Wanda Woman, is dedicated to caring for people ‒ for years she has offered kindness, companionship, a listening ear, opportunities for young and older people, and is well-known for her intergenerational work. Wanda is a force of nature with unlimited energy, bubbly personality and enthusiasm. Wanda’s brother and family thrive and survive with her support and unconditional love.”
Wanda was thrilled to be shortlisted for an award: “It’s absolutely amazing, outstanding. I feel honoured and privileged.”
Liam Bremner
Parents will always do anything for their children and dad, Liam Bremner, is no exception when it comes to caring for his eldest son, Cameron (9) who is non-verbal autistic.
Cameron attends Drummond School in Inverness but relies on his dad to support him in every way at home, from washing, meals and getting ready for school as well as the greater physical and emotional support he needs.
Liam, and wife Lucy, are also parents to six-year-old Archie, and the couple both work full-time.
A nomination highlighted the youngster’s love of spending time with his dad, especially driving around in the car ‒ whatever time of day or night!
Liam said: “He loves being on the road. And although he’s not verbal, he’s great company!
“Cameron needs a lot of looking after. It’s very difficult, but it’s also very rewarding at the same time.”
A nomination said: “Liam has been an absolute rock for the family and shows great strength and compassion. I wish him to be recognised for all the sacrifices he makes for Cameron and his family.
“He is always the one to pick up the pieces when things are at their worst. His strength of character amazes me.”
Liam admitted he was left shocked on hearing he had been shortlisted: “I’m stunned, I was almost laughing in disbelief! But I’m also proud, emotional and chuffed!”
Parklands Care Homes is sponsoring the award for carer of the year.
Ron Taylor, managing director of Parklands Care Homes, said: “We’re honoured to support the Highland Heroes awards. With over 30 years of experience in providing exceptional care in the north of Scotland, we believe it's vital to recognise and celebrate those who are dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of others.
“We chose to sponsor the carer of the year award because Parklands is synonymous with care in the Highlands. Having been a carer myself, I understand the extraordinary dedication and commitment it takes. This award celebrates the unsung heroes who offer their heart and soul to care for others.
"I would encourage everyone to vote for the incredible carers in their community. Their tireless work often goes unnoticed, and this is a perfect opportunity to highlight their dedication and give them the recognition they truly deserve."
