A GREAT-GRANDFATHER has been honoured for his voluntary work with a charity that provides free cruises for the elderly, disabled and those with special needs.

John A Gordon (81) from Inverness is a former chairman of Seagull Trust Cruises’ Highland branch who still puts his skills to use in helping the group which has just made him an honorary life member “in grateful acknowledgment” of his service.

Th charity’s current chairman, David Mieras, presented Mr Gordon with a framed certificate at the charity’s latest executive committee meeting.

Seagull Trust Cruises runs boats on waterways across Scotland including the Caledonian Canal.

Mr Gordon was born in Inverness but brought up in Tain and later lived in Dingwall before eventually moving back to the Highland capital for work as an electrical engineer with the former North of Scotland Hydro Electric Board. He joined the Highland branch of the Seagull Trust as a crewman in 2001, becoming a qualified skipper and eventually branch chairman for nine years from 2008.

He continues to play a hands-on role in the maintenance of the local cruise vessel, Highland Cross Seagull, and now lives in Lochardil with wife Muriel.

His certificate reads: “Be it known that the Trustees of Seagull Trust Cruises have conferred the distinction of honorary life membership of the Trust on John Alexander Gordon, in recognition of interest in the welfare of disabled people and those who have special needs and in grateful acknowledgement of invaluable services rendered to Seagull Trust Cruises.”
