Hundreds apply for quartet of firefighter jobs

MORE than 800 people have applied for four vacant full-time firefighter posts at Inverness station, it has emerged.

Senior fire chiefs have been overwhelmed by the response considering the service has been going through troubled times.

Improvements are being made to firefighter safety following critism last year with an extra £1 million invested in training.

The additional staff will take crew numbers to 76 at Inverness — the only full-time station in the Highlands.

“We are delighted at the level of response for the Firefighter vacancies in Inverness," said Stewart Edgar, the service’s deputy chief fire officer.

"Candidates are currently taking part in a vigorous selection process to ensure that we continue to have the high calibre of firefighters which enables us provide the highest standard of emergency response services to our communities. “
