A MULTI-MILLION pound upgrade of the busy Inshes roundabout could take place within the next to three years.

The work is necessary before the eastern and western links of the Inverness bypass — of which route options are currently being discussed — can be completed.

The upgrade would involve widening the roundabout and the introduction of a computer system to manage additional traffic lights which will control lanes whilst traffic is on the roundabout — similar to the scheme at the Broxden roundabout on the A9 near Perth.

The work will cost £5 million and must be carried out prior to the completion of roads joining the A96 with the A9, and the Southern Distributor Road with the A82.

Inshes roundabout connects to the distributor road and Highland Council, which is responsible for it, views the upgrade as integral to the bypass plans, which will help reduce congestion in the city centre.
