There was a happy ending after a much-loved cat went missing.

The elderly pet was found lying in a pool of water in Iona Road in the Muirtown area of Inverness.

After being checked by an Inverness Cat Rescue vet the "old boy" was found to be fine – apart from being very wet and cold.

In a Facebook post, a charity spokesman said: "He seems to have no major health problems. He has a growth on the inner corner of his right eye. He is neutered, but not microchipped."

The appeal to find his owner was successful and a second post showed him returned safely home to his "mum" Lilian who was in tears of happiness to have him home.

The spokesman said: "Lilian is 90 years old, and her cat and her wee dog are the light of her life. When we asked her what the cat's name was she said she didn't ever give him a name, she just called him Mammy's Boy. He is 17 years old, and doesn't usually wander further than the next door garden."

He added that Lilian had been up most of the night calling for her cat and by the following day was quite distraught thinking the worst had happened to him.

"What a lovely lady, who just adores her pets, and who was so grateful to have him home," he said. "Many thanks to Jennifer, who alerted us to Mammy's Boy's plight this morning, and to Shelley, who recognised him and put us in touch with his owner. We so love a happy ending."
