Inverness whisky lover Matthew Farmer wins Spirit of Whisky poetry competition with Burns Night poem
An Inverness whisky lover won a UK-wide poetry competition celebrating Scotland's national drink.
Matthew Farmer (34) has been crowned the winner of Whisky Investment Partners’, first ever Spirit of Whisky competition.
The national whisky stockist teamed up with BBC Radio Scotland presenter and whisky-lover, Vic Galloway, to kick off the competition and inspire budding poets to get involved – you can watch him reciting the full poem in the video below.
Mr Farmer fought off stiff competition to claim the prize, receiving a rare, vintage bottle of Annandale’s Man O’Words Scotch whisky from Whisky Investment Partners’ own collection.
Commenting on his win, he said: “I’m over the moon to have won The Spirit of Whisky competition. I’m a whisky lover myself, so to receive a rare bottle of it is amazing – especially as it’s inspired by Robert Burns. I’ll certainly be raising a glass to auld lang syne with this unpeated, single ex-bourbon cask matured malt!”
Launched on Burns Night, The Spirit of Whisky competition invited whisky lovers from across the UK to submit a seven-line poem, celebrating what they enjoy most about this beloved tipple.
Karan Bhullar, Partner at Whisky Investment Partners, commented: “We were blown away by the response to the Spirit of Whisky competition, and the standard of submissions was fantastic! It’s great to see whisky lovers from around the country getting involved and sharing their passion with us. In the end we selected Matthew’s poem as the winner because it had everything – it was clever, humorous, and clearly showed his love for whisky!”

Mr. MacRitchie
Put ice in his whisky
Much to our private dismay.
He sang “What a bouquet!”
And pronounced it Is-lay,
Then told us his palate was a remarkable talent
And that this one had notes of damp hay.
