Inverness mourns death of King George III in 1820

THE pages of The Inverness Courier carried black borders as it reported the death of King George III on January 29 at Windsor Castle, aged 81.

The news had been officially received at Fort George where the flag was flown at half mast followed by the firing of a 60-gun salute which could be heard at Inverness.

The paper reported the proclamation of his son, George IV, to succeed the throne took place at the Inverness Exchange where a salute was fired by the Inverness Local Militia and patriotic and national airs were played.
