An Inverness shopper got a bit of a surprise when she opened up a bag of apples she had purchased from a city store.

The woman, who wished to remain anonymous, was shocked to find one apple among the bunch of otherwise fully red fruits that was half green.

“I’ve never seen anything like it before and, looking into it a wee bit since, it does seem to be a bit of a one in a million situation,” she said.

The apples were bought from the Inverness branch of Asda and while the woman was unsure of the exact variety of apple she had purchased said they would have been from a children’s pack.

“That’s what I go for because I can’t really manage the bigger apples,” she said.

“I wasn’t put off the idea of eating it because of how it looked but I was intrigued - it’s like two different apples joined together.”

A bit of research online reveals a couple of theories about how such apples are formed - potentially either by genetic mutation or the lighter half of the apple getting less light as it’s developing than the side which turns the “true” colour.

“My granddaughter said that I should get onto eBay and see if I could sell it!” the woman said.

“I’m not going to do that but I would be really interested if anyone knows of any way to preserve the apple, just so that I could keep it as a curiosity if possible.

“In all my 70 years I’ve never seen anything like it!”
