Scottish independence Yes group reports surge in donations after "appalling" vandalism at Inverness premises
A pro-Scottish independence group hit by “an appalling act of vandalism” is reporting a surge of donations and goodwill messages after damage to its Inverness premises.
The InverYESs city centre hub on Huntly Street was targetted by what members believe was a politically-motivated attack in the early hours of Saturday last week.
Front-facing windows at the Nessie’s Place campaign HQ were smashed, with merchandise and art works damaged.
It is understood a witness saw a black-clad individual with a covered face at the scene.
Judith Reid, who works with the hub, said a boulder had been used to shatter the glass and break the wooden door panels.
In an update note to members, the group described how the shocking incident had strengthened their determination to carry on campaigning.
The group wrote: “During the wee hours on Saturday morning, last week, our hub was extensively damaged by a mindless thug.
“All front facing windows were smashed and damage caused internally to merchandise and art works.
“Whilst this is an utterly appalling act of vandalism, we quickly set about clearing the public footpath, making all aspects of recovery and restoration from boarding up the window space to contacting relevant authorities and insurers.
“In spite of the mind numbing situation we found ourselves in, we continued with our set tasks on the pavement, with many locals stopping by to help or have a blether!
“They certainly gave us hope and the will to keep on, keeping on!
“We have been in constant contact with the owner of the building and we await confirmation of insurance information to replace and repair.
“We will keep you all updated in the process and progress.”
In a message of defiance to the culprit, the group added: “If the perpetrator thought that it would intimidate and deter us into a wee corner, not continuing our efforts in campaigning - he was far mistaken.
“The generosity of donations and messages of kindness from locals, and independence supporters far and wide, has been very humbling.”
The group is holding its monthly Well Being Walk tomorrow from 11am with a planned Bridges for Indy rally on Friars Bridge to follow.
Members and supporters will gather at the hub before setting up a flags display on the bridge from 12 noon.
