Is one of Hollywood’s next big blockbusters ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ being filmed in Cairngorms?
One of Hollywood’s biggest movies of next year is believed to currently have cast and crew in the strath for shooting.
‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’ is an American superhero film based on DC Comics featuring the character Supergirl.
It follows Kara Zor-El's story and her darker origin before she finally made her way to Earth.
The movie is being produced by DC Studios and will be distributed by Warner Bros.
Sources have told the Strathy that cast and crew are in the local area and there is currently strict security in the Glentromie and Gaick area although there has been no official confirmation of links with the production.
One contact said: “Security at the end of the road at Tromie Bridge who would not say anything except ‘it is a movie’.
“I met a convoy of mid size coaches heading out thst way at 1pm.
“And yesterday coming up the A9 there were about 20 ‘movie-maker’ lorries towing caravans, toilets, changing facilities and catering.”
Gaick Estate is the most southern of Aviemore-based Wildland’s holdings owned by Scotland’s biggest land owner and richest man Anders Holch Povlsen, CEO of Bestseller.
Wildland have been contacted for comment.
This will be Supergirl's first solo cinematic appearance since Supergirl (1984).
Milly Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El (Supergirl) and is the cousin of Kal-El (Superman).
She was raised on a chunk of the destroyed planet Krypton for the first 14 years of her life and watched everyone around her die, making her a more jaded person than her cousin who was raised on Earth by loving parents.
The cast also features Matthias Schoenaerts, Eve Ridley, David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham and Jason Momoa is making a cameo appearance as Lobo, an alien mercenary and bounty hunter.
The super-powered dog Krypto will also appear in the film.
The new Supergirl film was announced in January 2023 as an adaptation of the comic book miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow (2021–22) by Tom King and Bilquis Evely.
The movie is is scheduled to be released in the United States on June 26, next year. It will be part of the DCU's Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.
The Strathy has also contacted local large scale accommodation providers but they are usually bound by confidentiality clauses.
It is the latest in a long line of blockbuster movies to be shot in the strath with others being the James Bond epic 'No Time To Die', Batman movie 'The Dark Knight Rises', Ewan McGregor’s ‘Salmon Fishing in the Yemen’ and Mrs Brown starring Judi Dench and Billy Connolly.
The last known major production to be shot locally was part of the second series of BBC hit series SAS Rogue Heroes in the Cairngorms.
