Fiscal depute Sophie Marshall told Sheriff Eilidh Macdonald that the injured man who sustained a black eye, cuts and bruises, taunted Cowie during the attack by saying: "Is that all you have got?"
Defending, Marc Dickson said: "There is an element of provocation in the background after he and his wife separated and the other man was involved in a relationship with her at that time. My client bitterly regrets losing control.
"He never thought he would ever find himself in court for something like this."
Sheriff Macdonald fined Cowie, who admitted assault to injury, £680.
