AN Inverness school has been recognised for its dedication to pedal power.

Drakies Primary has been accredited as a cycling-friendly school by Cycling Scotland as part of its national programme to improve facilities and increase opportunities for children to cycle to school.

Danny Mackenzie, depute head teacher, said the school had received the award after implementing various measures such as installing a bike shelter and training some children through the Bikeability Scotland training programme, with more due to be trained this year.

“We undertook a survey to find out why children did or did not cycle to Drakies Primary,” he said.

“This helped us to identify some key areas that we could address to enable our community to be a safer place and from there, we have created a school travel plan which includes a variety of suggestions which we hope to act on.

“We are delighted to receive this award and look forward to promoting cycling further as we move forward.

“The health and wellbeing of our children is something that is very high on our agenda and we hope that we can encourage as many children as possible to come to Drakies Primary in an active way.”

Cycling Scotland said the school had “an enthusiastic and supportive cycling offering”.
