Inverness volunteer group celebrate member's 100th birthday
At the age of 100, Jeannie Wallace still goes for a walk everyday with one of her carers, and her favourite food is a chicken curry.
For Mrs Wallace there is quite a simple secret to a long, happy life. She said: "Keep going, keep working and don't sit down on your bum!"
Members of the volunteer group, Contact the Elderly marked her milestone birthday with a lunch and treats galore – Harry Gow even donated a cake in her honour.
Mrs Wallace – who still lives on her own – said she has had a wonderful few weeks celebrating her birthday and was very much enjoying her afternoon with the volunteer group.
She commented: "This party with Contact the Elderly is my third celebration now. I've been eating lots of cake!"
Mrs Wallace was originally born in Tarvis, Aberdeenshire where she attended Crathes School. She moved up to Inverness during the war, where she began working at Rossal Nursing home.
She said: "I came up by train when I was 20 years old and I have been here ever since. A lassie met me at the train station and I didn't know anyone. I started working with the babies and then I became a cook. I loved that job."
Mrs Wallace gave birth to three children and has five grandchildren, and five great grandchildren who all came to celebrate at one of her many birthday parties.
She said: "We had such a great time, and it was lovely to have everyone together."
One of Mrs Wallace's favourite hobbies used to be to knit, however, she is no longer able to do this.
"I have knitting all over the world", she commented, "I've won lots of prizes and I received the Crossroads cup."
Mrs Wallace has been attending Contact the Elderly for 25 years.
