Inverness play park under water as River Ness reaches record flood levels
RECORD river levels were recorded and roads were closed due to flooding after torrential rain hit the Highlands at the weekend.
The River Ness reached its second highest level in 43 years, and the River Beauly its highest level in 25 years.
The Ness burst its banks near the old Royal Northern Infirmary, but the new flood defences on the lower reaches of the river in the city centre were up to the job.
Both pedestrian bridges into the Ness Islands were locked with danger signs in place because of the volume of water flowing through the beauty spot.
Nearby the children’s play equipment at Whin Park was under water as the area became an extension of the River Ness with flood water pouring through it.
The Lovat Bridge Caravan Park was flooded when the River Beauly burst its banks and residents had to be evacuated by firefighters using inflatable boats.
Police Scotland said that the A831 Struy Road from Cannich to Mauld Bridge is currently closed along with the A831 Drumnadrochit to Cannich Road due to heavy flooding, and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.
A Police Scotland spokesman said: "We are currently working with partner agencies to address the issues and would ask the public to remain cautious when travelling in these areas."
