Local Labour Party chairwoman Linda Stewart said: “Bet McAllister’s decision to stand down has given us a chance to celebrate her fantastic record of service to the local community.
“She has been a Highland councillor for 17 years and has been tireless in working with individuals and groups and dealing with problems large and small. She is definitely a hard act to follow.
“Now we’re confident that Michael Gregson will be a hard-working and effective councillor, if he is elected on September 26.
“As a long-serving and much-respected secondary teacher, he has demonstrated great commitment and skill in public service. He previously served as an Inverness district councillor from 1992 to 1996, and he has been a member of the Children’s Panel, the Local Health Council, Eden Court board of governors and Inverness Sports Council.”
Mr Gregson said: “In times like these, Labour values matter more than ever. Inverness Central ward needs a representative who puts people first, and works hard to support communities, in the face of limited budgets and strained services.
“Whether it’s protecting green spaces, as by Dalneigh Primary School and Hawthorn Drive, ensuring Academy Street changes do not negatively impact businesses and residential areas, or fighting for funding – I believe I can do a good job as councillor.”
