Mary Dormer has been nominated as the Highland Liberal Democrats' candidate for the Inverness Central ward by-election next month.

A spokesman for the party said: "Mary has lived in the centre of Inverness for some years and knows many of the issues first hand.

"She is well known in the city through her involvement with community events and activities – for example she has been a key member of the Inverness Cathedral team for some time and the Inverness Music Festival is another of her commitments."

Ms Dormer said: “It’s a challenging ward at the heart of a growing city – it needs a hard-working champion and I am confident I can be that strong voice.

"After all, I live there and know some of the issues and can see the potential to do things better.”

Highland Council's Lib Dem group leader Alasdair Christie said: “Mary will make an excellent councillor for the area and will work tirelessly to help people while being a strong voice within the council for the city."

The by-election will be held on November 14 and follows the resignation of former councillor Richard Laird.
