Inverness police stand-off ends in arrest and court appearance for man

A 39-year-old man has appeared in private at Inverness Sheriff Court in connection with an incident in Smithton which required streets to be cordoned off and the attendance of a large police presence, several vehicles and the Armed Response Unit yesterday.

Emergency services were called to reports of an individual with a blunt weapon causing a disturbance in the Smithton Park area at around 11.35am.

A man was traced to a nearby flat and firearms officers were deployed.

William Cochrane appeared from custody before Sheriff Ian Cruickshank and made no plea to three charges of assault, one of breach of the peace and one of possessing an illegal drug.

He was committed for further examination and remanded in custody.

Cochrane will appear again within the next eight days.
